"Treated" and "animated graphics during play stoppages" (ie ads) are words that don't go together.

Damn NHL...

This all sounds terrible. I'm all for using technology to make the game better, but these all sound like gimmicks.

"Moreover, digital advertising technology can be seen from the comfort of your homes."
Finally, this is what I've always been waiting for.

"This means that fans watching the tournament on television will be treated to animated graphics during play stoppages."

Treated? You're serious?

"In an effort to prevent distracting viewers from game action, the static visuals will remain during gameplay."

Captain obvious? Is that you? The day i turn on the TV and the boards are playing commercials while the play is going will be last time i watch hockey.

No.
He was not being serious.

As long as t doesn't glow or anything stupid, I think the smart puck and jerseys are great - to be able to collect this type of data will give really interesting insights. The chip they are putting in the jerseys will give the same speed, acceleration, position and direction data on the players. This would be able to give us far better real time stats to look at as how the data is presented is developed.

The immediate availability to this data would make the intermission banter a little more interesting also.

The advertising stuff is kind of lame but with as expensive as the big show of professional sports is, its par for the course. If helps the teams thrive more financially I am ok with it. Hockey with more bumper stickers is still hockey. I am too busy watching how the game is played to worry about how things are decorated. If a few extra sponsors keeps tickets affordable I am good with that.
